The protest "game"

There is an online game I play a lot called Ministry of War.
In this game, you are building an army, recruit troops of all kinds (peltasts, cavalier, bowmen) and you assign them to battle enemies. You can enter the battle interface, operate your forces and view the battle's progress, in real time. You will see frequent alerts about your status: if you are using a special skill, if a unit have been destroyed, etc.

Now, for a second I close my eyes and I can simulate an ordinary course of a weekly demonstration in the west bank. "our troops" would be few- to- a dozen, shabab- what MoW would call " elite oriental infantry" ( in real life their ages may vary, starting from very young kids to young men in their early 20's).
They are equipped with a skill of stone hurling.
They have some other attributes, such as speed- how fast they can run, dodge, hide.
They get some bonus for being familiar with the location and
therefor  they get around easily.
Your forces also include villagers. They provide solidarity and moral.
They will usualy chant  anti occupation slogans and carry Palestinian flags, or posters.
Another unit is the international activists. They are armed with cameras and enthusiasm. Occasionally they can have themselves arrested rather lose a villager. Their documentation increase the protest's affect -which is an ingredient to make the protest successful.  Any unit may rarely succeed using a negotiation skill to release those who were arrested.
On the enemy's side, aka IOF you will fully equipped, armed and trained soldiers. Their motivation and moral may  not be as high as yours, (you better hope so) because it's friday and they're probably eager to be somewhere else.
BUT they get compensation that comes in many forms. They are armed wit h tear gas canister- resulting asphyxia and dis-orientation affect as well as panic and intimidation. They have stun grenades, although they have limited affect. They have rubber coated bullets able to cause lethal damage and injuries. They also have live ammunition. They can arrest protesters, what will decrease the number of your troops, they can beat protesters with batons , they also have intelligence skill- mistara'avim, troops that can disguise themselves as protesters and launch an attack by surprise or gather information about high profile participants that might be targeted. They can call for re-enforcement, and  so long.
Their major flaw is the amount of resources they consume, and the bad branding affect that results from publishing their actions.
Can I calculate what the duration of the protest will be, based on those variables?
Can I measure the success or failure of either side?
Not accurately, of-course. But I think each time the villagers go out to protest they win their pride, they are standing up for their rights, and each time the army loses prestige. Each time, children that attend the protests sustain mental damage and also risk themselves with traumatic i , that might include torture. Each time, all the Israelis suffer loss of valuable resources. Each time the soldiers lose some of their humanity.
Every arrest  might decrease the ability of the people to provide for themselves - a crucial ability for people that have children.
Least I can say is that any interception/ intervention  between civil population is a bad idea, drawing more and more people into the course of bloody violence. The more ppeople drawn to that circle, we lose hope and a chance to change the wrongs and make things better

I call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions against the State of Israel

I think for me it is easier to identify myself with a call for boycott based on the
who profits list (http://www.whoprofits.org/) .
It's difficult for me to endorse a call for boycott just on basis of "ties to Israel".
Especially one that calls for "cultural and academic boycott" on individuals.
People should not be blamed just for their un-chosen origins'
and what does "ties with Israel" mean?
If people are not employed, sponsored, receive funding from any governmental
official source- why should they endure collective punishment?

I would focus on
people who profit from the occupation/ association to israeli Govern system.

This is my note reffering to this post shred by friends:
I call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions against the State of Israel in order to harm the State of Israel by means of boycott. If this is not clear enough, I will clarify: I (XXXXXXXX) hereby call for any person to deliberately avoid economic, cultural or academic ties with another person or another factor only because of his ties with the State of Israel, one of its institutions or an area under its control, in such a way that may cause economic, cultural or academic damage. I knowingly publish a public call for a boycott against the State of Israel, hoping that according to the content and circumstances of the publication there is reasonable probability that the call will bring about a boycott; I am aware of this possibility.

www.whoprofits.org

This post is written as a response to this Facebook note:

I give my 2 pennies to support boycott from within

whenever I  think about BDS I can hear the words of human rights advocate and Nobel prize laurette Shirin Ebadi, regarding her own country Iran :
"I support sanctions, but sanctions to hurt the regime, not the people".
Now I am looking for ways to manifest my endorsement to the Palestinian call for BDS (boycott, diverstment, sanctions) against Israel.
The first thing I am thinking about is asking artists not to come not to come and perform in Apartheid Israel. Reason I am asking this is to help tear up the facade of normalization hung upon us. It is not normal for Palestinians living in the west bank to be seperated from their families in beseiged Gaza strip.
It is not a normal situation as milion of Palestinians in West Bank are being stripped of basic human rights, their lands confisticated, their minors illegaly arrested and interrogated without their parents, taken out of their beds in the dead night by gun-point,
it is not normal that when  Israeli Jews arrested with Palestinians,
Israelis face civil court, while Palestinians are submitted to martial law.
West Bank Palestinians have no citizenships- their movement is restricted, & supposedly an artist I fancy will come and perform in Tel Aviv I would not be able to invite a friend from Ramallah to accompany me.
In order to adapt to this twisted reality we Israelis have adapted  a mechanism of disacossiation- we disconnect ourselves from what happens only a few miles a way from us. This is an un-healthy situation, both for Israelis & Palestinians.
On behalf of what I see as the people's interest, it's crucial not to play along with the illusion of "normalization", of a normal state that its interior policy goes within global concesus,
not to allow the smiling face of apartheid provide cover to the real nature of occupation and colonization. I believe that artists, intellectuals  can serve a role as embassadors of peace, a voice of conscience,
a mirror of society, if they choose to take their stand and use the influence they have on our minds and our hearts.

Artists that cancel their arrivals reflect the global reaction to the breaches of human rights & illegal actions taken by elected Israeli government.
They make us face the reality we have created with our own hands, and I think right now that is the first step towards change,
I believe that facing the reality,

as harsh as it is  is a first step towards change.

I also believe that singing & playing,
enjoying fine arts while so close to us people are suffering is morally wrong.
If you ask me- why Israel?
Atrocities happen in many other places around the globe,
why not ban them as well?
Well, I think that in Israel such actions can make an impact.
Israel is a semi- western country, that cares a lot about her image.
Second of all,the call for BDS comes from Palestinians themselves,
as a mean of non-violent resistance against the occupation.
I think it is a productive action to take, be compelled in solidarity with
people who choose to take off the path of direct armed violence,
a path that the Israeli Government (Knesset) seem to endorse.
Third of all, this is the country  that gives me citizenship, that I enjoy its privileges-
I might not have any influence about other places, but I'd like to think that
I can make my voice heard about what my own country is doing.
I myself have never been abroad and don't even own a passport-
so this mean of resistance may affect me as well-
I bare in mind that I might miss a concert of a favored artists,
or face angry responses,
might even lose a job opportunity in case any of my actions will promote divestment -
that makes me even more at peace-
I am making a decision may affect me as well- but it may also be for a greater good, and a resolution that I'll get to see with my own eyes.

why would Israelis support BDS?

I am a jew. I live in Israel.
Therefor- I am unable to "boycott" israeli products
I am not sure I would have done so even if I could.
I was born here, and I am living among my people.

on the other hand,
I find it hard to ignore the BDS
movement's  advantages:
It's offering  a fair  chance to voice out a cry that
i'm holding inside,
and i think other Israelis share with me:

When Israel, my mother-land commits
in war-crimes against civil population-
as it did during cast lead operation,
if it deprives people from
basic human rights
such as freedom of movement,
freedom of protest and Gathering
(as in Biliin and Nialin-
villages that suffers most from
the route of seperation wall,
were declared as
restricted zone by
IDF in order to prevent protesters
from gathering ),
it  does so as a government policy.
The government was fairly elected.

It reflects the votes of  the majority of Israelis.
But it is also taking actions that are in my opinion -
immoral. Not right.

Showing support for the BDS movement
gives me a chance to say:
NOT IN MY NAME .
Those breaches of human rights,
The policy the Israeli government is
implenting have made its
implications on me.
as well other young israelis
: The result-
 if I may borrow words
of another israeli blogger-
a quiet despair that leads to a feeling of being
ailenated from this country.
While I wish things would change.

BDS campagin gives a hope, a chance that things can change,
but not in a violent way.
It's painfull , it's not easy to be such a "traitor",
to give up on "national solidarity",
to give up on many beliefs I've had about
"jewish state of Israel as  heaven of democracy in middle East".

But with all the feeling of
un-comfort and fear - I would like to believe that BDS ,
can achieve its goal and be effective as Shirin Ebady,
not in a way that would hurt the innocent people,
but will force the government to bare the responsibilty for
disobeying international law &; breaches of human rights.
